Case: Steel Structure Works for the Shuyang Huadong Flowers and Plants World
Horticultural trading complexes are deceptively demanding buildings. They combine long-span covered halls, a permanently humid internal environment, high daylight demand and traffic loads from continuous deliveries — a combination that pushes a steel structure in ways a conventional warehouse does not. This case sets out the delivery framework applied to the Shuyang Huadong Flowers and Plants World steel structure works.
Scope of Work
- Primary steel frames, secondary members, purlins and bracing for the trading halls;
- Roof and wall cladding systems with daylight panels and rainwater drainage;
- Fabrication, surface protection, transport, erection and alignment;
- Coordination of interfaces with civil works, services and the operator's fit-out.

What Makes a Horticultural Building Different
- Humidity is a structural issue. Plants, irrigation and washing keep internal humidity high, so condensation forms on cold steel surfaces. Corrosion protection must be specified for a wet internal environment, not a dry interior.
- Long spans without obstruction. Trading halls need column-free areas for display layouts, vehicle movement and stall reconfiguration, which drives the frame toward large-span portal or truss solutions.
- Daylight and ventilation. Skylight panels and roof ventilators are built into the envelope, and every penetration is a potential leak path if the detailing is not resolved at design stage.
- Loads that are not just snow and wind. Hanging display systems, irrigation pipework and signage add point loads that must be located before fabrication, not drilled in afterwards.
Delivery Sequence
| Stage | Key control |
|---|---|
| Shop fabrication | Member marking, weld quality, hole patterns match-drilled |
| Surface protection | Blasting grade, coating system selected for humid service, DFT inspection |
| Erection | Frame plumb and alignment before bracing is finalised |
| Envelope | Roof and skylight detailing, drainage falls, penetration sealing |
Coordination matters as much as fabrication here: the steel frame sets the tolerances that cladding, skylights and drainage must work to, so interface details are agreed on paper before the first member is erected on site.
Quality and Handover
- Traceability — steel grades and mill certificates linked to member marks;
- Welding — qualified procedures, visual and NDT inspection to the specified acceptance level;
- Geometry — frame span, height, purlin spacing and column verticality surveyed before cladding;
- Protection — dry film thickness and touch-up records, particularly at site-welded and cut surfaces.
A horticultural building is judged years later, by whether the steel is still protected and the roof still dry. Getting the envelope detailing and the corrosion specification right at the start is what determines that outcome.
Project-specific parameters — building area, span, steel weight, coating system and programme — are added on confirmation of the final project data.
